Local solar workforce programs snags $4M

A local solar technology workforce development group has attracted a $4 million state grant.

The SolarTech Workforce Innovations Collaborative — a partnership of SolarTech, a San Jose solar industry advocacy organization, the North Valley Job Training Consortium (NOVA) and the Foothill-De Anza Community College District — will use the grant to train and place 245 workers in jobs relating to renewable energy.

The $4 million is coming from the California Labor and Workforce Development Agency.

"These challenge grant will give industries in the green economy the ability to develop training programs that they know will address their workforce needs and put people back to work," Victoria Bradshaw, secretary of the Labor and Workforce Development Agency, said in a statement. "Working with community colleges and other partners, thousands of workers will receive the skills needed to keep the green economy expanding now and into the next decade."

The local grant was among [six] awards totaling $19 million issued by Bradshaw's agency statewide.
